Board Elections, 2016 - Nominee Information
As an Incorporated Society our constitution provides for six Board members to be elected by the NZHIT membership. Elected Board members hold their position for a two-year term and there is a rotation process in place (to ensure governance continuity) that has three elected positions become available at the Annual General Meeting each year.
Hence, having called for nominations from NZHIT Members the following are the nominees who are putting themselves forward for the election process. The three successful nominees will be announced at the NZHIT AGM to be held on the 2nd of November, 2016 at 7:30-8:45am in Auckland (in conjunction with the HiNZ Conference).

As someone who strives to introduce innovative solutions to New Zealanders, I am a fervent believer in the power of technology and what it can do to enhance our lives. Nowhere is this truer, I believe, than for the healthcare industry. Technology is absolutely the key to developing and maintaining a sustainable health system that can not only improve healthcare for all New Zealanders but also provide a viable avenue to export kiwi solutions to become a leader on the world stage.
I would love the opportunity to apply my skills, experience and energy to help realise this vision. In his current role with Microsoft, Russell has been regularly engaged with the Ministry of Health – most recently in relation to the evolution of its policy regarding cloud services. In this work, he advocated for change on behalf of both Microsoft’s customers and the NZ health IT industry. Looking forward, Russell will continue to work with Microsoft’s global healthcare team to help enable digital transformation across the NZ health system, and support local health IT vendors to develop innovative products and services that are locally and globally relevant.
Why vote for me
If elected, Russell would bring significant public and private sector experience - including in health - to the NZHIT Board. This experience includes:
- From the mid-1990’s, working at the State Services Commission where he led the development of the original New Zealand e‑government programme.
- Two years working for the OECD’s e-government programme in Paris.
- Leading the Ministry of Health’s sector Information Strategy and Policy team in 2006/07– a role that involved significant engagement with the NZ Health IT Cluster. The role also involved leading New Zealand’s participation in creating the International Health Terminology Standards Development Organisation (IHTSDO) that owns and governs SNOMED CT®. Russell then served as New Zealand’s first Director of the IHTSDO.
- From 2007-2013, working for Cisco Systems in Hong Kong and then London as a strategic advisor to the company’s top public and private sector customers.

David is a Healthcare representative at IBM New Zealand, working with Health IT companies, the Ministry of Health and District Health Boards across the country. Based in Auckland, he has 20+ years’ experience in sales management, company management, financial and IT roles, and is also a Chartered Accountant.
Why vote for me
Since joining the NZHIT Board in 2012 we have made considerable progress in a number of key areas for our members. This includes formulating a new strategy, re-branding, raising the organisation’s profile across the sector, participating in and running member events and initiating major sector projects such as the Vision and Charter for Interoperability.
Going forward into 2017 there are huge challenges ahead for New Zealand’s Health Sector with an ageing population, dramatic increases in chronic conditions, rising costs and skills shortages. In addition, consumers are demanding convenient digital interaction with their health service providers, and security risks are growing. NZHIT and its Board see IT as playing an essential role in meeting these challenges.
I would like to continue our work for the benefit of our members and the sector as we rise to these challenges. As part of IBM, I have access to extensive health resources including thought leadership in key areas such as mobile apps, analytics and cognitive computing. In addition, we will continue with our event sponsorship, overseas promotion and assistance for start-ups.
Hamish Franklin, Executive – Integrated Care
GREEN CROSS HEALTH
Hamish currently heads up Innovation and Integrated Care across Green Cross Health’s Pharmacy, Medical and Home Health businesses. Prior to this, Hamish was a co-founder of Atlantis Healthcare, where he established the Australian (’03-’07), and UK & European (’07-’12) businesses, prior to working in the USA (’13-’15). During his tenure with Atlantis, Hamish worked to understand the primary care marketplaces in each of those countries, and establish programs of integrated care, specifically focused on improving self-management. Prior to that Hamish spent 10 years as a direct & loyalty marketer, establishing and growing 3 businesses that specialised in consumer engagement and behaviour change.
“The highlight of my work at Atlantis was bringing together designers, writers, health psychologists, and primary care providers to create evidence based interventions that both improved health outcomes, and were engaging and valued by patients.”
Why vote for me
Here’s 4 reasons to vote for me -
- I’m an advocate for the consumer (aka the patient) – I think a lot of Health IT is built for the providers, not the patients. I’ll do my best to make sure that health IT engages with and is valued by consumers, first, rather than as an after-thought.
- I believe businesses are the medium by which innovation is introduced into practice (it’s not academia, nor is it health systems or government agencies), and as such businesses need an environment in which to innovate, thrive, and demonstrate their impact. We need to open the environment in NZ so that small health IT businesses as well as large ones can flourish.
- I’ve had extensive insight into overseas health systems and solutions, therefore I bring a fresh perspective and examples of solutions that work well elsewhere, and plenty of experience of those that don’t as well!
- I have strong ties to academia as I believe that good research is a great standard by which to evaluate innovative solutions. By demonstrating value (improved outcomes, lower per patient cost, patient satisfaction) we can work with government to support value based rather than activity based contracting/commissioning. Academia have a real role to play in validating the value that we bring.
Kate Reid, General Manager New Zealand
ORION HEALTH
Kate is a global healthcare business leader with over 20 years of experience in delivering on transforming consumer behavioural change programmes, creative marketing and technology enabled healthcare solutions. She is passionate about improving the health of a population by providing optimal personalised care for each and every individual.
Kate believes that effecting sustained behavioural change relies on holistically managing all aspects of a person’s world not just their physical health. To do this effectively requires cross sector collaboration and partnership and a longer term view of managing people’s overall health and wellbeing. This partnership focus interfaces well with Kates appointment to Orion Health in Dec 2015 as Director of Strategy and Partnerships where she worked on establishing a growing partner community unifying New Zealand’s health information and technology capabilities (NZ Health Inc.). Now as GM for Orion Health, she continues to drive towards a more integrated and collaborative landscape for better health outcomes for New Zealanders.
I think the world of health and the opportunity to improve patient care has never been more exciting than it is now. The full potential for healthcare transformation is still to happen and we, as NZ healthcare industry partners are poised to play a significant role in this positive change. But this will only happen if we work together, collaborate and create an open, interoperable healthcare system.
Core to this, is the data revolution that is upon us, which will have a profound impact on how we deliver care and how people engage in their own health and wellbeing. How we manage the tsunami of new data sources will be critical, not just capturing it, but being able to use it intelligently to deliver personalised care to each and every unique New Zealander.
Why vote for me
I was elected onto the NZHIT Board in 2014 and during my 2 years on the Board, I’ve had the privilege of meeting many of you. Having spent 16 years working in the UK, and since coming home, working with many of you, I believe we have outstanding innovative healthcare companies and the mindset for partnership here on our shores. Together, we can deliver and manage this challenge ahead of us.
I would love to serve another term on the NZHIT Board to continue to work with you all to achieve this. Our work is not yet done!!

Why vote for me
John believes NZHIT has a key strategic “grass roots” leadership role - to collaborate across the sector, to underpin the implementation of the smart focus of the NZ Health Strategy and equally importantly to capitalize on the huge international opportunities for our member organizations. His ability to listen and distil information and to untangle complicated issues and present them in a logical manner is a strength that he will bring to NZHIT. Margaret Owens, Director of Independent Living
BUPA New Zealand
Margaret Owens is the Director of Independent Living for Bupa New Zealand running 34 retirement villages throughout New Zealand and has been an elected member of the Retirement Villages Association Executive since 2004 and President of the RVA for three years from 2012 to 2015. Margaret also runs the medical alarms business for Bupa which has 9000 clients located in the community and is innovating with products that will enable the call for help to be mobile rather than to a fixed point.
Margaret is the Chair of the Catholic Caring Foundation, Chair of the Remuera Branch of the National Party and previously Deputy Chair of the Telecare Services Association. Past Board experience has included four years as Chair of the Board of Trustees at Marist College and one year as an independent director of a retirement village.
Margaret represents the stance of an operator recognising that IT will play an important part in the delivery of healthcare in the future and believes that advocacy to government and other agencies is crucial in the development of sustainable business models taking telehealth and telecare from concepts and trials to operational impact. While not having technical expertise in health IT Margaret has a vast range of governance experience to bring to the table.
Why vote for me
I have significant governance experience and will bring the point of view of an operator to the table. While allied stakeholders can input into the development of solutions, the models are not sustainable unless the products can be delivered in a commercial environment. I bring commercial expertise, governance experience and advocacy skills to the table and believe I can add value in helping negotiate contracts for service to customers that can benefit from these interventions.
Mike Weiss, Chief Executive Officer
KONNECT NET
Mike Weiss is an experienced executive with a strong background in Insurance, medical claims, technology and business to business engagement. He is currently the CEO of Konnect NET, where he successfully navigated an industry wide solution to a full 100% market share. This Company epitomises the broadening stakeholder group of the NZHIT Membership, with its juxtaposition to the Health Sector, Government and the Insurance funders.
Mike is also a dedicated waka ama (outrigger) paddler and has won gold medals in Hawaii (2016) and New York (2015) and would happily talk about training and paddling technique if you had the time.
Why vote for me
My career includes companies at various stages of growth, turnaround and change, start-up and established. I have strong experience and networks in both the insurance and healthcare sectors. This helps me relate to and impartially represent a wide range of interests.
I have a reputation for building engagement and effectively collaborating to achieve a better outcome for all parties. As a Board member, I seek a new level of insight and commercial astuteness to overcome the challenges of the day, adopting a systemic view that achieves in the short term and simultaneously builds towards the long-term objective.
Ruth Bruce, Director
KINROSS GROUP
Ruth is a Director of the Kinross Group, a NZ mobile technology company. She has been working with nurses in Community Health for the last 6 years, both onshore and offshore in NZ, Fiji, Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands.
From these experiences, Ruth has gained an understanding of both the requirements for implementing mobile technology in the health sector, and the transformational effect it can have on both the daily life of the nurse and patient care.
Ruth has had extensive practical experience in implementing change in workplaces through a career that has spanned the Corporate and NFP sectors. Additionally, Ruth brings both the perspective of the entrepreneurial “start–up” business to the Board table; and extensive Board experience as the Chair of LCONZ (University IT Library Consortia) and Board memberships in the NGO sector.
Why vote for me
- Commitment - I’m committed to delivering value through IT to NZ Heath. Why? So that access for all to quality healthcare remains a hallmark of the NZ Health service. Through my work in developing countries, I have seen the alternatives. And we can do better. However, we have a system that is straining to deliver what many New Zealanders need. I truly believe that IT has the major part to play in the transformation of health services for the 21st century.
- Experience - I have extensive Governance experience both as a Chair and a Board Member. I know that organisations become better through having strong competency based Boards.
- Voice - I represent the voice of the smaller companies who develop innovative value for this sector. NZ is a hard market for innovation despite the myths. Yes, we develop solutions but we’re not so good at buying them. Many IT companies get their first major contracts offshore. I’d like to focus on promoting NZ IT as a source of innovation and value for NZ Health.
To deliver value, we need a unified voice and approach. I believe that NZHIT is an organisation that can provide leadership in making this real. With your support, I welcome the opportunity to contribute.
